The Th350 transmission was first put into use in 1969, replacing the inferior Powerglide two-speed transmission. It is easier to remove those bolts first before you start working under the car. In many cases, this helps alleviate some of the required pedal effort to disengage the clutch. Transmission Installation Your first obstacle is the transmission crossmember, regardless of whether you put together your own performance setup or use a kit in a box; the transmission crossmember most likely requires modification or replacement. A good practice is to mark where the pressure plate is on the flywheel. That is unless you're Ronnie Sox if you don't know then look it up.
Dobbertin says it only requires 38 inches from the rear axle centerline to the front of the engine for this ultimate package. In the early days of the C3, the Hurst aftermarket shifter was a common and welcome replacement for the Muncie-supplied sloppy factory shifters and light-duty shift linkage. There are now only six bolts left to be removed and those are at the ends of the cross member. This boot goes on with three screws also included in your kit. When the clutch plates are failing you usually find other debris in the pan clutch plate material. If you move the heaviest component of the car toward the center, or at least in between the front and rear axles, you create a vehicle that is extremely well-balanced both in acceleration and in handling. The key phrase is bolt-in.
It should freely spin in one direction and hold firmly in the other. Rebuilding an automatic transmission requires a lot of skill and patience. These mounts incorporate the upper control arm mounts as well as the upper shock and lower cradle mounts. The hardest part is getting the dash out to install the clutch lever. That makes a neat job and also plugs that hole in the large rubber grommet. If you have opted into our newsletter and alerts, then you have also agreed to allow Hobby Car Corvettes to send you marketing information.
The tight clearances and better bearings require lighter-viscosity fluids in many of the latest manual gearboxes. This is rarely the problem because most pumps are very reliable, but a quick check is a good idea. Currently, the 700R4 or 4L60E, which is a 700R4 with electronic shift control, is the most common automatic transmission swap into a C3. You can still ease through parking lots if you modify the shift points without the fear of the engine revving to 5,500 just to move from one parking space to the other. The trick was getting the correct push point on the clutch pedal for the clutch pedal feel but American Powertrain has that figured out. The BorgWarner Super T-10 4-speed manual transmission was first introduced during Corvette production in 1974.
The 1983—1987 T5 versions are dubbed non-world-class and only capable of handling a wimpy 265 ft-lbs of torque. I will also use some seam sealer on the underside to hide my cut and pop rivets. Loosen a transmission cooling line most are at the radiator and start the engine. The governor controls the shift points after approximately half throttle. Governor fluid pressure acts with the valve-body fluid pressure moving shift valves to control shift timing.
Step-3: Check for Wear or Damage Any component, such as this forward clutch drum, that shows wear or damage will be replaced. Dobbertin also offers a kit to mount the Camaro diff directly onto the Corvette cradle. Jack the transmission up into the tunnel. This transmission continues to be a favorite with drag racers because it is so strong and reliable. It was very popular with road racers and came with the same gear ratios that were installed into the M21 close-ratio transmission. This is one thing that I have done numerous times over the years: removing the crossmember and making it look like a factory removable automatic transmission—equipped frame.
Secure the transmission to the jack. That means diaphragm pressure plates apply more pressure while requiring less pedal effort. You have a few other options to resolve the speedometer issue. You will also need to drill out the three holes for the rod boot which is secured with three screws from the backside. Although tempting, resist the urge to set it up on Strip mode.
You now need to remove the remaining bolts securing the transmission to the block. Bigblock engines appeared in a few early C3s from 1968—1974, so if you have one of these rare Sharks, you are probably going to keep the original equipment because it is so valuable. All you have to do is look at his car-building history to know that. You will also notice how much quieter the car is during cruising. I painted the fabricated piece yellow before I screwed the boot down. It took all of two minutes to slide mine into place.
That piece has the correct cutout in it to accept the inner boot that came with your kit. There is a thick washer that goes over the pin first, followed by the rod and then a spring clip. Heavier weights make the centrifugal event happen sooner; in turn, the shift point is lower. Manual control valve bodies operate similarly to a manual transmission because they give you full control of shifting. Use the torque converter and run it up to stall speed to get the fluid heated up.
